In a recent hunt on various job sites from the UK and USA for positions for information architects I found surprisingly little. It’s a new position in firms for web dev. All to often the job is done by designers, programmers and marketers without them really knowing it.

I’m trying to get my hands on various definitions or views from different sources. One enlightened company from Cape Town has contributed the following: (by the way I think they’re still in need of one)

  • The IA is a key member of an interdisciplinary team which creates solutions that will be delivered across a broad range of channels. The IA works with designers and technologists to ensure that functionality meets client objectives, and to deliver compelling user experiences in creative and innovative ways.

  • You will be responsible for user-advocacy through the logical flow of site interactions, including site organisation, logical flow, navigation systems, and page-level information and functional interface design. You will be responsible for balancing desired site interactions with technological limitations.
