Hotel Yeoville: phase 2

We have just completed the first phase of the Hotel Yeoville Project. We spent two weeks researching Internet cafe's in this location, their owners and users through Q & A interviews and a website based questionnaire situated in the cafe's as the default home page of a few of the terminals.

Phase 2 includes consolidating and analysing the feedback and creating the user experience and information architecture for the future website that is aimed at answering the needs of this unique community. More to come on this project soon...

Real community building

JH-01 has been invited onto an amazing project (which must remain un-named) with some amazing people (who must also remain un-named for the moment) which will be engaging with the community and people of Yeoville in Johannesburg.

The suburb of Yeoville (located alongside the notorious Hillbrow) has changed radically over the past 20 years and is now home to large African foreign national communties (Congolese, Nigerian, Malian, etc) and many new black SA'n residents to this part of Johannesburg. It is a deeply troubled space at the level of culture, security, civil rights, health...you name it. But it's also modern Africa at its most intense and vibrant and for many who have moved there it is a place of opportunity - the reason they came to South Africa.

And what do you know? Again we find a proliferation of Internet Cafes (over 30) in again, a space of 10 or so city blocks. JH-01's involvement is to research the communities use of the cafes, their patterns of use and the kinds of things they need more broadly to function better in this community, Johannesburg and South Africa. We are then going to design a user experience for a website that will be available in the Internet Cafes to help improve their quality of life.

It's an amazing project and we think of it as bottom up e-government and it will hopefully help us on our way to a future objective: to be building better city and country websites.

AfricaRemix panel

Last night was the opening of the AfricaRemix exhibition at the Joburg Art Gallery. The work on it is totally amazing and it is travelling several continents. There are events lined up for AfricaRemix over the next two months one of which will be a panel discussion which I have been invited to speak on. I believe the topic will be somewhere in the very broad area of migration, communication and culture and they want me to contribute based on the Internet Cafe research we've been doing. Very very cool to be a part of such an important event.

The research paper I presented at the IA Summit in Las Vegas can be found here on slideshare.

It just occurred to me that I failed to mention this on the blog...

Contextual Enquiry into Internet Cafes Johannesburg

We've completed our contextual enquiry into Internet cafes in Johannesburg and are blown away with what we've found. The final paper is here: "Communal computing and shared spaces of use: a study of Internet cafes in developing contexts".

Every year the IA Institute offers two progress grants. This year we got one of those for this research and would really like to thank the grants committee for choosing us. Special thanks also to Karl Fast who helped with getting the paper ready for the Summit.

We're not full blown researchers here at jh-01 but it goes to show what can happen with a little help from the community of IA.
